Continuing Professional Development often abbreviated to CPD is widely recognised as vital to the improvement of standards and skills for individuals and their industries. Many therapists will belong to a membership body such as the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) where by annual renewal is dependent on having completed the minimum amount of CPD criteria set by them.
The health and beauty industry is forever evolving due to client demands, trends and technology available. This creates exciting opportunities also comes with challenges and is important to decide which new trends are good for you and not fall into the mistake of trying to do everything to keep up. Continuing Professional Development enables a therapist to regularly apply attention to important areas of development and takes appropriate action to reduce any shortfalls in knowledge.
CPD should be seen as an opportunity not as a chore as it is a way to remain competitive with those other therapists and salons around you can give the opportunity to differentiate yourself from others. This can direct more enquiries to you and helps you look fresh also. As more people become professionally qualified with similar qualifications, CPD becomes more important as a means of separating yourself from the pack.
Depending on your membership body or insurance requirements which differs from organisation to organisation CPD can range from anything to online courses, practical in house courses, writing articles and performing research or attending regional group meetings. Ensuring you hit the CPD criteria set will involve some planning but we advise looking for any new disciplines or techniques you want to offer and scheduling and budgeting them into your annual plan.
It is important that you check with both your course provider and insurer to ensure that the course you want to do is accredited correctly and will be insured otherwise you may have to redo another course in the same qualification. We also recommend seeing when your annual year runs to make sure you do the courses within the correct 12 months, for example does the year run April to April or alongside when you joined which may be different.
