Tell me about the EMMETT Technique

The EMMETT Technique is a unique form of body relaxation therapy for both people and animals, involving the application of light finger pressure at specific points. It is based on the belief that light touch can trigger a relaxation response in the soft tissues of the body, and that the therapist may thereby help relieve feelings of tension. Many people find they feel more at ease within their body and their emotional well being is enhanced. Animals appear more calm and at ease.

The result is often instantaneous feelings of greater comfort. EMMETT is truly a complementary therapy. It may be applied in isolation but it also combines easily with all other bodywork and exercise specialities such as massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy, Bowen therapy, craniosacral therapy, yoga, Pilates and personal training as some typical examples.

How does EMMETT work?

Good question! It is based on the belief that light touch can trigger a relaxation response in the soft tissues of the body, and that the therapist thereby may help relieve tension which results in feelings of improved comfort.

We believe a good analogy is that of a digital touch-screen. With the touch-screen, if you touch too hard, nothing happens. If you touch on the wrong spot nothing happens. If you hold for too long, all the icons start to shake. But if you touch with just the right amount of pressure in a specific location, an application opens and you are good to go. We believe the EMMETT points are small sensory receptors that allow access to the brain via the therapists’ touch. With the correct light touch, the brain receives and evaluates this stimulus and initiates the relaxation response in the soft tissue.  There are receptor points all over the body so the therapist can target the area of concern. It may sound surprising but the relaxation response and the feeling of ease in the area is often immediate.

The pressure required is not heavy or painful. “No pain no gain” has NO place in the EMMETT therapist’s approach.

EMMETT Therapy Practitioner Training

The EMMETT Technique Practitioner training is designed for qualified medical professionals and complementary therapists interested in extending their skills. All practitioners are encouraged to enhance their existing practice by integrating the EMMETT Technique with their prior training. Exercise specialists such as Pilates instructors, yoga teachers and personal trainers and coaches are also very attracted to this course. Undergraduates and non-therapists are also welcome to attend as there are no pre-requisites.

The course is divided into two-day learning blocks, called Modules, with 6 Modules in total across 11 days. Material covered in the previous Module is reviewed before new work is covered. This ensures that all participants are up to date and ready to learn new material. Modules 1&2 are one day each in duration and always taught as a two-day block. The total course therefore consists of 11 days.

This course is recognised by the Complementary Health Professionals (CHP).

A friend of mine said that she was going to attend some training weekend in England and whether I would like to come. I’m always in for an adventure and what an adventure it was. The EMMETT Technique and especially Claire Stone captured my heart and blew my mind away, all from day one. The first two modules were strange, difficult for me as my training is far from this wonderful technique but my confidence grew throughout the modules. In the beginning I thought Claire was exaggerating when she felt muscles move … and then suddenly, I started feeling it too and since then it has not stopped and I hope it never will. It’s so wonderful to discover where the pain is, where the strain is and feel the buzzing in you fingers, the muscles embracing your EMMETT finger. I have been practising a lot, treating family and friends and many people that I don’t know and the reactions are so intense and being able to help is a feeling that I cannot put into words.

The day I walked into Claire’s classroom is by far, one of the best days of my life.

Thank you Ross for inventing this great technique.
Thank you Claire for being who you are, for listening, guiding, supporting us, for your humour, your sympathy and patience.
You’re as wonderful as the technique.
